What Happens Between People?

3 minute reading · July 2025

A relationship is not contained inside either person.

We know how to measure a person. A heartbeat, change in skin conductance, movement, temperatures, the rhythms of a body responding to the world around it. But there are moments when the boundary between self and with another person gets blurred. Where does an experience like that reside?

A relationship is not contained inside either person.

Something else appears when two people are considered together.

We already know that people can fall into sync. Heart rhythms can shift together. Movement and speech can find a shared rhythm. Attention can meet in the same place.

And then there are moments that sit at the edge of explanation.

A thought shared before it is spoken or a word written at the exact moment the same word is heard from somewhere else. Mind melds. When two minds seem to briefly meet somewhere inbetween.

What happens between people in a moment like that- does it leave anything behind?

It becomes an open loop of questions.

Could we follow a moment as it moves through two people and across time, mapping what changes along the way, to discover whether synchronicity has patterns of its own?Could we map these frequencies?

Could a single moment leave a shape that no one signal could reveal on its own? Could we make that shape perceptible?

And then leave its meaning where it belongs: with the people who lived it.
